Riddle: These two sit side by side, and monitor the people, although different they are the same, complete with a steeple.

Answer: Methodist & Baptist Churches

 

The Baptist Church land was purchased in 1850 by a fellowship of Baptists. The church did not get its first full time pastor, Reverend Thomas Chilton, until 1853. Pastor O.P. Stark designed and built the sanctuary in 1902. The upper part of the steeple was destroyed by a storm in 1918 and worship was held here until the 1940's. The church is now the Church of Christ.

 

The Methodist Congregation was established in 1838 by Isaac Strickland. This ws one of the first in the Republic of Texas. Two additional sanctuaries were built here in 1852 and 1908. The original steeple was blown off around 1918 and never replaced. The Methodist Church moved to a new location in 2002. The church is now the Living Savior Lutheron Church.
